Tantric massage at The Maltings is slow, unhurried, full-body work with attention to breathing rather than to a sequence of muscles. It is £160 for sixty minutes, cash on arrival, no deposit and no booking fee, given naturist in a private massage room.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits people who have had ordinary massages and found that they treated the body and left the head exactly where it was. The pace is the active ingredient — it is slow enough that you stop waiting for the next thing to happen, which is where the difference lies.

It is not the best first booking at a naturist spa. Most people find it easier as a second or third visit, and the full body massage is the gentler introduction — nobody will think less of you for starting there. It is also not the massage for a stiff shoulder or a bad back; book deep tissue for that.

What it feels like

It starts slower than you expect and stays there. Your therapist will spend the first few minutes doing very little, letting your breathing settle, before any real work begins — that is deliberate, and rushing it defeats the massage.

From there it is full-body work with long, continuous strokes rather than a section-by-section route around the body, and less clear separation between one part and the next. You turn over partway. There is more stillness in it than in other massages; hands resting rather than always moving is part of the technique, not a pause.

The pressure is light to medium and steady throughout. If you want it firmer, say so, though at that point what you probably want is a different massage rather than a firmer version of this one.

You will be asked how you are getting on. Answer honestly — the pace can be adjusted, and lying there waiting for it to end is a wasted hour.

Afterwards

Do not book anything demanding for the rest of the day. The effect of the pace is that it takes a while to come back up to normal speed, and most people find they are quiet and slow for an hour or two afterwards. Drink some water, use the showers, and leave when you are ready rather than when the hour is up.

If it did not land the first time, that is common and not a verdict on the massage. The people who get the most from it are usually on their second or third.

The others

If this is not the one: full body, deep tissue, hot stones, four hand or body to body. Prices for all six are on the massage page.

Questions people ask

What actually happens?

You lie down as you would for any massage. The therapist works the whole body in long unbroken strokes, much more slowly than usual, and talks you into a steady breathing rhythm. That is the massage.

Do I need any experience?

None. Most people booking it have never had one before.

Can I ask for a shorter session?

We only offer the hour. Any less and there is not enough time for the pace to do what it does.

What makes it tantric rather than just slow?

Breathing and pace. The work is unhurried and full-body with attention to how you are breathing rather than to a sequence of muscles, so it lands differently from a massage aimed at tension.

Why only sixty minutes?

Because it does not work rushed. Sixty minutes at £160 is the shortest version of it we think is worth booking, and shortening it takes out the part that makes it what it is.

Should I start with this or something else?

Most people find it easier as a second or third visit rather than a first. If you have never been to a naturist spa at all, a full body massage is the gentler introduction, and nobody will think less of you for starting there.
