Deep tissue massage at The Maltings is slower, firmer work aimed at specific held tension rather than at general relaxation. Thirty minutes is £80, forty-five is £100 and sixty is £120, cash on arrival, with no deposit and no booking fee. Like everything here it is given naturist — both of you undressed — in a private massage room.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits people who carry tension in one place and know exactly where it is: a shoulder that has not moved properly since a desk job started, a lower back that seizes after driving, a neck that has been wrong for months. If you can point at the problem, this is the one.

It does not suit anyone who mainly wants to switch off for an hour — that is the full body massage, same price, gentler pace. And it is not the right first booking if firm pressure worries you, in which case hot stones reaches depth using heat instead of force.

What it feels like

You are asked where the problem is before anything starts, and that conversation matters more here than for any other treatment. Be specific — 'left shoulder blade, worse in the mornings' gets you a better hour than 'my back'.

She warms the whole area first with broader, lighter strokes, because working cold muscle hard achieves nothing except soreness. Then the pace slows and the pressure builds, using forearm and elbow as well as hands, working across the muscle fibre rather than along it. She will stay on one area for several minutes at a time rather than moving steadily down the body. The last few minutes go back to lighter work to settle everything down.

Firm is the point, but firm is not the same as painful, and a therapist here will not push you through pain on the theory that it is doing you good. There is a difference between the deep ache of a knot releasing, which is worth staying with, and a sharp bright pain, which is not. Say which one you are feeling.

You can ask her to ease off at any point, and you will not be talked out of it or made to feel you have failed at something.

Afterwards

Expect to feel it the next day, in the way you do after a hard session at the gym. That fades within a day or two. Drink water, keep moving gently rather than sitting still all evening, and a hot shower before bed helps.

If you have had a very stubborn area worked, one session rarely finishes the job. Most people who come for a specific problem come back within a fortnight for a second.

The others

If this is not the one: full body, hot stones, four hand, tantric or body to body. Prices for all six are on the massage page.

Questions people ask

Is it painful?

It can feel intense on a tight knot, but it should not be painful. Say so the moment it tips over and your therapist will ease off — nobody here is trying to prove a point.

How long before I feel the benefit?

Usually the following morning. You may feel slightly worked over that evening, much like the day after training.

Should I book 45 or 60 minutes?

If it is one area — a shoulder, a lower back — 45 is plenty. If there are two or three places you want dealt with, take the hour.

What makes it deeper than the standard massage?

Slower strokes and more forearm and elbow, working across the muscle rather than along it. It is the same price as the full body — £80 for thirty minutes, £100 for forty-five and £120 for sixty; what changes is the technique, not the length.

Will I be sore the next day?

Sometimes, in the way you are after a hard session at the gym, and it passes within a day or two. Drink some water, and tell your therapist if you would rather she stayed lighter.

Can I ask her to ease off partway through?

Yes, at any point, and you will not be talked out of it. Say so plainly — the pressure is adjusted on the spot and nobody treats it as a complaint.
